Project Arogya Strengthens Community Action Against Tobacco Addiction
Community participation has the power to transform lives and drive lasting social change.
HPPI’s Project Arogya marked World No Tobacco Day on May 31, 2026 by mobilising communities across 31 villages under the global theme, “Unmasking the Appeal – Countering Nicotine and Tobacco Addiction.”
A total of 1,465 community members, including local leaders, youth, women, adolescents, partners, and other stakeholders, came together to raise awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco use and strengthen their commitment to healthier, tobacco-free communities.
The awareness sessions highlighted the various forms of tobacco commonly used, including cigarettes, bidis, gutkha, khaini, and other smokeless products. Participants learned about the severe health consequences of tobacco consumption, including cancer, tuberculosis, respiratory illnesses, and heart disease. The discussions also focused on the impact of tobacco on vulnerable groups such as children, pregnant women, and passive smokers.
Through interactive discussions, question-and-answer sessions, and real-life examples, community members openly shared their experiences and concerns, particularly regarding the growing use of tobacco among youth and adolescents. Information on government tobacco control laws, de-addiction services, and available health support mechanisms was also shared to encourage informed decision-making and behaviour change.
IEC materials, posters, and charts were used to make the sessions engaging and accessible, helping participants better understand the risks associated with tobacco use and the importance of prevention.
One of the strongest messages emerging from the campaign was that meaningful change begins when communities take ownership of local challenges. By bringing together diverse groups of people, the initiative created a platform for dialogue, learning, and collective responsibility toward public health.
The event concluded with all participants taking a pledge to quit tobacco and support those seeking to overcome addiction, and spread awareness among family members, friends, and neighbours.
The campaign not only increased awareness about the dangers of tobacco but also reinforced the vital role communities play in creating healthier environments. As communities unite around a common cause, they become powerful agents of change, paving the way for a healthier and tobacco-free future.
When communities come together, awareness turns into action, and action leads to lasting change.
