World Environment Day 2026: From Awareness to Action

World Environment Day 2026: From Awareness to Action

A nurturing environment and nourishing food are essentialities of human lives. Another commonality both share is the eminent need for their safety to stop the dire effects in our lives. The World Environment Day and World Food Safety Day celebrated respectively on 5th and 7th of June serve as a major remainder of these facts. That is why, we at Humana People to People work towards betterment and change in these sectors from a grassroot level.

The intricacy between environment conservation and food safety is often overlooked. The World Environment Day 2026 calls for action towards climate change, soil degradation, emissions, restoring ecosystems and conserving biodiversity. While World Food Safety Day 2026, asks us to take time from our routines and rituals to introspect that foodborne diseases still affect millions each year, despite being largely preventable through practical actions across the food chain. It is non-negotiable that in themselves, they are essential, but what commonly mis-assumed is the separation of these topics, which in reality, is far from reality.

Safe food begins from the soil before it reaches a market, shop, or kitchen. Beginnings start from healthy soils, clean water, resilient farming systems, safe storage, good hygiene, and informed food choices. Climate change disrupts all these foundations through droughts, floods, heat stress, erratic rainfall, and environmental degradation, placing additional pressure on smallholder farmers and rural communities worldwide.

As Humana People to People India, we are guided by one principle: lasting development is followed by events where people organise, lead, and take action together. Our people-to-people approach engages communities to be at the centre of change. We work at ground-level with smallholder farmers, community groups, and local authorities to identify challenges, drive solutions, and build long-term resilience, focusing on building local ownership for sustainable results.

This approach shapes our Sustainable Agriculture and Environment programmes. These farmers and their families lead efforts to increase food production, protect natural resources, and adapt to climate change.

We recognise that small-scale farmers are central to food security and environmental stewardship. During 2025-26, HPPI reached over million people through Holistic Rural Development Project (HRDP) Prayagraj.

Under the theme ‘Climate Smart Farming’ of the project, major activities were interactive Farmers’ Club Meetings, Farmer Capacity Building Training, Demo Plots encouraging farmers to adopt smart, sustainable, and chemical-free farming methods. Other actions were Nutri Garden Initiative, developing Vermicompost Units, Village Development Committee Meetings, and Exposure Visit for Farmers.

Another theme included ‘Natural Resource Management’, which involved installation of Solar based group irrigation system in Sarai Bahar Village, Matiara Village, designed to provide farmers with reliable and low-cost irrigation facilities for their fields.

Humana’s another major step towards environmental benefit involves dedicated tree-plantation drives throughout the year. One of the most significant drives of our organisation runs from June-to-July when the season is nearing monsoon, in correspondence to the World Environment Day. We have planted 2.53 million trees since 2005, and our target this year involves plantation of 40,000 trees.
