Education is the protector against inequity

Education is the protector against inequity

Rosie is in sixth standard and loves mathematics. But this was not her story always. She had dropped out of school halfway through her second grade. She had no interest in education back then. It is only when she became a part of the Kadam programme, she started enjoying her syllabi. Rosie started having fun with the way she was taught through games and practical examples. She remembers being taught shapes from life examples like circle from car tyres, triangle while eating samosas. Her love for mathematics was born when the basics of addition were taught to her while playing with stones. To build on these concepts, Rosie got study material through the programme as well. She ultimately was able to re-enroll and be formalised into a school.

Nassu, Rosie’s mother understands the importance of education, she says ‘All of us in the family are not educated. I know now that unless my children are educated, they have no future.’ Nassu has 3 boys and 4 girls and all of them are being educated. Nassu believes it is their duty as parents to educate their children and prepare them for life.

Kadam and Kadam+ are important initiatives to bring out-of-school children into formal schools, and bridging the learning gaps in primary school children. The programme helps them to reach age-appropriate learning levels. Rosie become part of the Kadam programme in Jhansi. She is currently studying in D.C.Taalpura Middle School, Jhansi.

Rosie’s favourite movie is Bajrangi Bhaijaan; she likes how the titular character protects the little girl and helps her to reach her home securely. Education is playing that protective role in Rosie and Nussu’s family’s future.
