Community-Led Action Marks World TB Day 2026

Community-Led Action Marks World TB Day 2026

HPPI in collaboration with TB Alliance India held a community-focused event on the occasion of World TB Day 2026 at the Mori Gate Night Shelter under the global theme “Yes! We Can End TB”. The event focused on “Reaching the Unreached – A Community-Led Approach,” targeting vulnerable urban homeless populations who often face barriers to accessing healthcare services.

The event combined awareness generation, active case finding, survivor engagement, and multi-stakeholder collaboration. An on-site TB screening camp was conducted in collaboration with the Chest Clinic team, enabling immediate access to diagnostic services for shelter residents. Over 250 individuals from the homeless community were directly engaged, with presumptive cases identified and referred for further care. Nutritional support was provided to People with TB, reinforcing the importance of comprehensive care and dignity in treatment.

During the event, TB and Drug-Resistant TB survivors shared their personal experiences, helping to reduce stigma and encourage timely care-seeking. Community engagement was further strengthened through street theatre performances that addressed TB myths, promoted early diagnosis, and emphasised collective responsibility in ending TB.

The initiative was appreciated by Dr KP Singh, District TB Officer (Pili Kothi, Delhi), Dr BK Vashisht (Former State TB Officer, Delhi) Dr. Akshay Patil (TB Alliance), Dr Kuldeep Singh Sachdeva, (Former Deputy Director General, National TB Elimination Programme and National AIDS Control Programme, government of India), they recognised the importance of reaching vulnerable communities through coordinated, community-led approaches.

By delivering services directly within communities and strengthening partnerships across government, technical agencies, and civil society, the initiative demonstrated a practical and scalable model for urban TB interventions. Through sustained collaboration and community-led actions, Humana People to People India remains committed to advancing the national vision of a TB-Free India.
