Meet Harkesh, an AWC Malviya Nagar, Jaipur Student
“HPPI helped me find a perfect balance between
supporting my family and supporting my dream”
India consists of millions of children who work to financially support their family often sacrificing education and possibility of a better future at the altar of crippling poverty. Harkesh Bairwa, another such 15 year old boy, worked to support his family while secretly nurturing a dream to study and better his future.
Harkesh belongs to a family of 6 living in a slum in Malviya Nagar, Jaipur. Both his parents do hard manual labour at a construction site but due to erratic nature of this job, they were unable to consistently provide for the entire family. Since his sister contributes by taking care of all household chores and his younger brothers go to school, it became Harkesh’s responsibility to plug these financial holes by working.
During his initial years he supported his family by working but soon realized that to break this intergenerational cycle of poverty he needed to traverse on a different path, a path that lead to education. Team at AWC Jaipur made him realize that through education he can put an end to this recurrent suffering of his family. After attending AWC from 9am to 2pm , he spends his evening working a part time job at a cosmetic store.
Upon returning from work at night he starts preparing for the next day at school. He likes English and Science and hopes to make the most of this opportunity to learn, that has come his way. He wants to finish his studies and take up a career that can provide a financially stable life to his family.
“I am thankful to Humana People to People India, who gave me the vision to dream big and the right guidance to achieve those dreams.”- Harkesh
