Solar-powered Irrigation Boosts Rural Livelihoods in Prayagraj
Humana People to People India’s (HPPI) Holistic Rural Development Project (HRDP) in Prayagraj is driving a major shift toward sustainable agriculture through the integration of clean energy solutions. As part of the initiative, 20 solar-powered group irrigation units have been installed across project villages, bringing previously uncultivated land under irrigation and enhancing rural productivity.
The solar systems now supply reliable, eco-friendly irrigation to more than 400 acres of farmland, benefiting over 449 small and marginal farmers through a collective ownership model that promotes shared responsibility and long-term sustainability.
By replacing diesel and electricity-powered pumps with solar irrigation, the project has achieved an estimated annual reduction of 365,853 kg of CO₂ emissions, significantly lowering the region’s carbon footprint. Alongside this, farmers are being supported to adopt sustainable and chemical-free farming practices, helping restore soil health and strengthen climate-resilient agriculture.
By placing clean energy at the centre of rural development, HPPI is contributing to greener livelihoods while empowering communities to build a more sustainable future. The Holistic Rural Development Project in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh is being implemented by HPPI in partnership with HDFC Bank, under its flagship initiative Parivartan, to foster self-reliant and environmentally conscious rural communities.
