In July 2016 Humana People to People India (HPPI) partnered with Education Above All and the Department of Education, Haryana (HSSPP) as well as more than 12 co-partners to get 30,000 Out-of-School Children (OOSC) enrolled in school through the Kadam Step-Up Programme. After passing the second year mark of implementation, the project has added 12,000 children to their original goal of getting 30,000 OOSC back to school.

The Kadam Step-Up Programme aims to mainstream OOSC into formal education systems by providing holistic academic support to children to attain age-appropriate learning levels. Since it’s inception, the project has mainstreamed 18,000+ marginalized children into school in the states of Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi. HSSPP, besides its provision of space in government schools for the Kadam classes, also provides teachers for conducting classes and facilitates printing of the Kadam books. For the coming academic year, HSSPP will provide 800 teachers for the project.

The success of the partnership has led to increased interest from other states to implement Kadam through public-private partnerships, whereof MoU’s has since been signed with the Governments of Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra and Jammu and Kashmir. HPPI is also in talks with the Governemnts of Bihar and Jharkhand to implement the Kadam Programme.
