Education is the key to progress and to make the right impact one needs to start young. In an attempt to create classrooms that make learning impactful and suited for the 21st century, the Directorate of Elementary Education, Haryana and Humana People to People India (HPPI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in 2018 to build a model progressive classroom, starting in Grade 1, across more than 400 schools in 119 blocks of Haryana.

On January 23 and 24, senior members of the HPPI education team, Priti Sood Grover, Cristina Sorribas and Abhishek Dev Narayan, along with Haryana state government officials, facilitated a two-day workshop in Mahendergarh and Kanina, Haryana involving close to 120 head teachers to orient and train them to teach in a progressive classroom and execute the ‘English-medium, Bag-free School’ Programme. The teachers were also provided guidance to conduct themes and teach through fun activities. This was the third training organised by HPPI, after the other two which were held in Kurukshetra, Haryana.

Under this programme, a progressive classroom will be school bag-free and will have no homework. There will be a TV and projector for smart learning imparted through digitised stories. Apart from being taught in the medium of English, there will be thematic learning with a new theme headline every two weeks. The theme headlines are chosen in such a way that they may not be related to the school curriculum but are essential for the holistic development and real-life learning of the students. The students will also practice yoga and have access to more than 60 stories, a few sourced from Pratham’s Storyweaver, a digital repository of multilingual stories for children from the non-profit, Pratham Books.

HPPI has so far conducted three training events under which more than 184 schools have been covered for this new-age progressive classroom initiative. The classrooms are renovated with pigeonholes and bright colours to make the environment more child-friendly. The government of Haryana identifies the classroom in which the programme should run and appoints teachers who attend the training sessions.
