On December 12, more than 300 women from nearby villages of Nuh district of Haryana gathered at the Mini Secretariat to celebrate the success of the first year of the Nai Disha programme. They performed skits, shared their experiences and gave testimonies about the impact the programme has made in their lives.

Followed by the result-sharing event in Haryana, HPPI organised another event in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh on December 19, to celebrate the women who received computer-based functional literacy under the Nai Disha project in the state. More than 400 neo-literate women from 3 districts—Ujjain, Dewas and Khandwa—along with representatives from the government, HPPI team and our partner, TCS, got together in Ujjain and celebrated the success of the programme by sharing their experiences.

In 2017, Humana People to People India (HPPI) joined hands with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) to incorporate a computer-based functional literacy methodology in its Nai Disha project. The project’s aim was to empower 100,000 women in 10 identified districts in four states— Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh—to develop their functional literacy, so that, amongst the targeted adults, learning becomes relevant to living and working.

The Nai Disha project uses a mix of teaching software, multimedia presentations and printed material to teach to read, write and do functional arithmetic in a fraction of time used by conventional methods. The entire programme was delivered at scale by volunteer Preraks (learning facilitators), who worked with 50 women in 90 days delivering at least 50 hours of learning through 40 sessions that included lessons, practice, formative and summative tests. All the 500 Preraks were equipped with a laptop, making them mobile, and together they ran 1000 learning centres, each with 25 women every three months. The unique and innovative programme and its delivery mechanism witnessed over 100,000 women.
